Rumours & Signings
Coming off a very successful 2009 season, the Lions have been on the recruiting drive.
Wanting to be part of the very tight, successful side and also to play with champion
Lion 1st baseman Tony “Double Play” Wyatt, the recruiters have been able to lure Gary
Mackay out of retirement to add some pace and flair to the already star studded lineup.
Also joining the Lions this year is a young, fiery left handed pitcher by the name of
Michael Pratt. Being new to the club he was already informed of Wyatt’s great feat during
the Grand Final last year and can’t wait to run out with the side.
During the summer Double Play was head hunted by the big leagues in the USA after word
travelled about his athleticism, throwing and speed between bases. Tony decided though that
Major League baseball was beneath him and decided to stay with the Lions for another
year “ So many people here, in our crowds are still yet to see the Wyatt show, I can’t
let my fans down.” Double Play told me earlier this week.
The first training session on Sunday 18th April was a sight to behold, plenty of running, clean
fielding and acrobatics were seen at Merri Park. Some huge hitting was also on display.
Notable absentees Sammy, Griffo, Cass and Jordan will have to work very hard next week to
fit into such a strong lineup for Round 1.
With signings comes some goings, we have lost starting pitcher Stephen Pengelly this season.
He has decided that what is required training wise, and the workload to play at the elite level
we play at taking too much of a toll on his young body, that he will play in the Geelong League
this season. “ The rigorous training regime at Northcote has taken its toll on me, so I will
take it easier this year in Geelong.” Stephen said earlier this week. He thanked the team for
the past few years and wished them all the best.
We would like to take the time to wish Stephen the very best for they year and hope he
succeeds and has a cracking good year.
